Clinical Interests

I am a veterinary educator formally trained in veterinary anatomic pathology and molecular immunology, with emphasis and specialized training in understanding and investigating diseases in zoo, exotic, and wild animals. My clinical interests include disease investigations in animal collections and wildlife, zoonotic and emerging diseases associated with the pet adn wildlife trade. I also have a very strong interest in clinical education and public outreach, and I am actively engaged in training veterinary students in their 2nd and 4th years, interns, and residents in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, internal medicine, and surgery.  I am currently working to establish Center of Excellence for Exotic, Zoo, and Wild Animal Health here at the Universtiy of Wisconsin-Madison.

My research interests focus on spontaneous diseases of zoo and wild animals, immunology of and host responses to infectious respiratory diseases, and animal models of human respiratory disease including COVID-19, influenza, tuberculosis, and filoviruses.
