About the Artist
Dr. Dörte Döpfer, DVM, PhD, considers herself “a hobby artist” who developed her love of painting as a toddler spending time using paints and pencils to tell stories. Her grandfather provided her first watercolor set and a “big brush” because he thought those so important for a starting artist. Fascinated by mosaics, the challenge to assemble a “whole” from all its facets and pieces while preserving the “enchantment inside,” is one of the driving motivations for her beadwork, painting and storytelling.
Dr. Döpfer’s 2021 holiday cards reflect how much we care for and are cared by animals. This sentiment is also reflected in her earlier “may you be well” Project, an eight-painting series showing cows Bavarian Brown Cattle and Fleckvieh cattle in their environments under human care. For this series, Dr. Döpfer painted the images on birchwood panels, using watercolors, acrylic and water mixable oil paints, in collaboration with fellow veterinarian and artist Ineke Eyck.
Born in Germany, Dr. Döpfer earned her DVM from Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, and earned her MSc in Epidemiology and PhD in veterinary microbiology from Utrecht University in The Netherlands. She has been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine since 2008 and is currently a professor of Food Animal Production Medicine. She resides in Middleton, Wisconsin, together with her husband, two college-age children, her two cats, and a pony.
