Strategic Plan Update | December 2013
SVM
Training the Next Generation

Dean Markel

Strategic Priority Seven focuses on training the next generation of academic veterinarians to advance veterinary medicine through their outstanding clinical skills, teaching abilities, and research capabilities. One of the first initiatives undertaken in support of this strategic priority was the creation of the Clinical Research Task Force chaired by Lauren Trepanier. In addition, Cecilia Robat was hired as the school’s Clinical Trials Coordinator. With the leadership of Associate Deans Dale Bjorling and Ruthanne Chun, the Clinical Research Taskforce will focus on enhancing faculty and trainee research and educational opportunities, including identifying intramural and extramural funding resources.

Another initiative in support of this strategic priority is encouraging graduate students, residents, and faculty to attend teaching workshops and/or the UW Teaching Academy. We will also focus on continuing to improve our Clinical Skills Laboratory under the direction of Robb Hardie and Lynn Maki, with plans for expansion of the laboratory when the solar panel area is remodeled in 2015. The school also will continue to support mentored research training opportunities for our students, residents, and graduate students to further enhance their research capabilities.
