Research

Dr. Smith's research interests are focused in the areas of acute and chronic pain management in companion animals and laboratory animals. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Morris Animal Foundation, and the UW Companion Animal Foundation. She has  published many papers on novel analgesic techniques or novel analgesic drugs or drug combinations in clinical patients as well as laboratory animals.  She is also interested in the analgesic effects and peripheral/central mechanisms of sodium channel blockers and GABA agonists/pathways in models of chronic neuropathic pain. In 2014, Dr. Smith was awarded the Langley Prize for best research manuscript by the Association of Veterinary Anesthetists and the Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia journal.

Responsibilities

Dr. Smith is involved in teaching students in the second, third, and fourth year veterinary curriculum. She coordinates the Clinical Anesthesia rotation and the Advanced Anesthesia elective in the students' fourth year.  Her teaching responsibilities are split between didactic teaching in lecture courses and instruction of fourth year students during their clinical rotations in anesthesiology. Dr. Smith is the faculty coordinator for the UW SVM residency program in Anesthesiology. She has served as Chair of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) Board of Directors and is past President of the ACVAA. She serves on many departmental and SVM committees, as well as several committees for the ACVAA.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Smith's clinical interests lie in the application of new approaches to pain management in companion animals. She has spoken at many national and international meetings in the areas of pain management and use of new anesthetic agents in veterinary medicine.
