10 Things We’re Thankful for in 2022

The UW School of Veterinary Medicine has so much to be thankful for in 2022.

Our Donors

This year we are especially grateful to the many donors and gifts that are making the school’s building expansion and renovation possible. These new spaces will update and double the size of our small animal hospital, enhance our Morrie Waud Large Animal Hospital, increase our laboratory space, and improve the spaces available to teach our students.

Thank you to our donors for your generosity which allows us to pursue our mission!

Our Students

Students are the reason we exist, and we’re so thankful for the talented and dedicated students who chose the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. This year, we celebrated the graduation of 88 new DVMs and welcomed 96 in the Class of 2026 to our school. We are also home to 72 graduate students who play a critical role in important research discoveries that benefit animal and human health.

Whether it be making critical discoveries, starting veterinary businesses, or serving in key leadership roles, our students are establishing themselves in their respective fields while they learn and train for a range of exceptional career opportunities.

We thank the students who chose the SVM and continue to support them through their veterinary medical school journey.

Our Researchers

In addition to providing excellent education and compassionate and expert care, the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine is a leader in research that benefits animals and humans. People are surprised to learn that the SVM conducts over 75% of the infectious disease research at UW-Madison leading to discoveries that are moving the world forward at an extremely important time. From SARS-CoV-2 and influenza to oncology and dairy health and so much more – the school is meeting the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Our research reflects the concept of One Health – animal, human, and ecological health are intertwined. And because veterinary medicine stands at the intersection of animal and human health, we are at the forefront of critical discoveries and advancements.

And our thank you needs to include the many funding agencies that make research at the school possible. Support from federal agencies like the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Department of Defense (DOD) along with private foundations, is what allows SVM researchers to pursue their research and make discoveries that benefit animals and humans alike.

In 2022, the SVM received $34.4 million in research support funding, the highest amount ever realized by the school. As we look forward to the future of research, we thank the many funding agencies that invest in the promise of important advancements!

This research success would not be possible without the talented grants management, business services, and other financial staff who support these efforts. We send our appreciation and thanks to the many researchers and staff who work tirelessly to keep us healthy and safe.

Our New Building Team

If you’ve visited the SVM or UW Veterinary Care in the past year, you’ve probably noticed some action happening around the building- all part of the SVM’s $150 million building addition and renovation project! The construction will significantly increase and update our hospital and allow for state-of-the-art equipment such as PET/CT, as well as add new modern laboratories and improved spaces for teaching and learning.

This project is years in the making and would not have been possible without the support of the Wisconsin Legislature and Governor, UW campus and system leadership, and donors.

We’d like to specifically thank the Wisconsin Department of Administration, Flad Architects, Foil Wyatt Architects and Planners, AEI Affiliated Engineers, and C.D. Smith and their subcontractors for taking our vision and turning it into a reality. We look forward to celebrating the opening of the north building later in 2023 and the completion of renovations in the south building in late 2024.

And as we prepare for new facilities, we must also recognize our dedicated facilities team and their work to maintain and update all of our spaces and to keep our building occupants safe. We are grateful and look forward to their continued great work in our new and updated building.

Our Alumni

Since 1983, the UW School of Veterinary Medicine has trained talented veterinarians and graduate students. With 36 graduating classes (so far), thousands of our alumni are serving their communities and the world in important ways whether it be by improving the well-being of animals, protecting public health, advancing industry, furthering research that finds new ways to diagnose and treat animal and human health and more.

We are grateful to our alumni for the work that they do representing our school and for the many ways they give back. Their gifts, mentorship, referrals, and feedback ensure that the UW School of Veterinary Medicine remains among the top schools in the country.

UWVC Faculty & Staff

Exceptionally talented and dedicated staff, faculty and students at UW Veterinary Care provide compassionate and expert care for more than 30,000 patient visits each year through more than twenty specialties. Not only do our staff and faculty treat animals large and small with some of the most challenging medical needs, they’re also training tomorrow’s veterinarians.

While nationwide staff shortages and an increase in pet ownership may keep our technicians, clinicians, and staff busy, their job is always done with care. We can’t thank our UWVC employees enough for their continued dedication to their patients and their clients!

Our hard-working human resources staff have been a key partner with our hospital staffing needs, along with meeting the complex human resources needs of the entire school. We thank them as well for all that they do to ensure the school has the talent we need to be successful.

University Leadership

We were excited to welcome UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin to campus this summer. The support of our campus leaders has been and will continue to be critical to our success, whether it be our educational opportunities, research advancements, hospital operations, or building project.

We thank the leadership of UW-Madison, UW System and the Board of Regents for their continuing to champion the school and our work to serve Wisconsin and beyond.

Referring Veterinarians

When faced with a particularly challenging case requiring specialized training, where do you turn?

As the largest veterinary hospital in Wisconsin and with faculty at the forefront of critical discoveries and advancements, veterinarians around the state and beyond turn to us for expertise and support and, when required, refer their clients to us. With a team of specialists and advanced equipment we’re able to provide care that the average clinic isn’t equipped to offer. These cases are an important part of the teaching and training we provide to our students, interns, and residents.

To our veterinarian colleagues who entrust us with their patients, thank you.

Our Educators

Thank you to our dedicated faculty and instructors who train our students and house officers. In addition to everything they did to provide a quality education during the pandemic, they are putting in significant effort to create the next evolution in veterinary education through the curriculum revision process. Outside of the classroom they also provide mentorship and support to our students in many ways. The success of our graduates is a reflection of our educators’ hard work and commitment to excellence in teaching.

As the way we teach, train, and assess our students continues to evolve, our talented and dedicated IT professionals play a key role in facilitating the technology required to meet those needs. We are grateful to our IT team for this support as well as all they do to ensure our IT systems are secure and meet the needs for not only our educators and students, but also our research and hospital operations.

Thank you, faculty, staff, and instructors for all you do for our students.

Our Clients

Whether we are your primary care clinic, or we were there for you in a time of need, you trust us to take care of your animals like they’re our family.

UW Veterinary Care has seen a record number of cases the past few years yet each animal we see and client we serve are special to us. Our main focus has always been the comfort of our patients and the peace of mind of our clients.

We never take your trust in us for granted. We use today to thank our clients for choosing UW Veterinary Care for their animal care needs!
