Zygomycosis

Pneumocystis carinii

- Formerly considered a protozoan, grows as a cyst-like form in lung tissue. Doesn’t grow in vitro
- Foamy interstitial pneumonitis when CMI defective, scourge of AIDS patients.
- Common in most mammalian species, thought to be transmitted by aerosol.
- Can occur in stressed lab animals.
- Treat with sulfa/trimethoprim, pentamidine.

Protothecosis

- Prototheca zopfii (animals)
- P. wickerhamii (in humans).
- Thought to be an algae that lost chlorophyll.
- Multinucleated yeast-like organism on agar.
- Cattle - mastitis, enterocolitis
- Dogs - enterocolitis, abscesses
- Humans - progressive soft tissue infection
- Treatment - very resistant, surgical excision

Rhinosporidiosis

- Rhinosporidium seeberi
- forms spherules with endospores in tissue
- Vascularized polyps in nose and conjunctiva
- Can only grow in tissue culture in vitro
- Associated with water, polyps are chronic
- Reported to occur in horses, cattle, dogs, ducks, humans
- Resistant to treatment - surgically excise
