Opportunistic Fungal Infections

- Infections occur in immunocompromised animal or person - impaired CMI
Route of infection may be exogenous or endogenous - type of infection depends on agent and route of entry
- Cryptococcus
- Aspergillus
- Candida albicans and other yeasts
- Rhizopus, Mucor, other Zygomycetes

Opportunistic Infections

Host defense mechanisms
- Macrophages to kill spores - especially after inhalation
- Neutrophils attack hyphae
Therapy - varies by agent, some fungi very resistant to antifungal drugs
- Aspergillus
- Zygomycetes
