Epidemiology of food-borne disease; control of Salmonella in swine; ecology of antimicrobial resistance in food-borne bacteria; biological and financial consequences of infectious disease; sustainability of farm production; development of integrated systems to enhance food production and food safety. The research program in our laboratory bridges gaps between basic sciences and clinical sciences, with the goal to provide cutting edge solutions that are biologically sound and economically achievable. Our mission is to provide pork producers and others in the pork production chain with sustainable solutions to critical health related problems in swine production. We work toward this goal through the application of bacteriologic, immunologic and epidemiologic tools, including a strong focus on analytic epidemiology, both observational and experimental. The current primary pathogen of interest in the lab is Salmonella enterica, ranked as the most important foodborne pathogen of swine in the Unites States. Through field-based and experimental studies of the pathogen and its swine host we are developing methods to reduce the potential for spread to humans via the food chain.
