Streptococcal Zoonoses

Zoonotic S. suis, S. iniae and S. parasanguinous

Streptococcus suis

There have been several reports of zoonotic S. suis in people who have had direct contact with pigs, including:

S. iniae

There are now several reports linking cellulitis or systemic S. iniae infections in humans to contact with infected fish. This bacteria has been recovered from at least 22 species of fish worldwide, but human infections have been particularly associated with contact with tilapia.

S. parasanguinis

This is a rare cause of subclinical mastitis in sheep that has also been associated with endocarditis in humans.
