Ehrlichiosis

Ehrlichia ewengii as a cause of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in dogs and humans

This is an Ehrlichia agent previously shown to infect granulocytes in dogs and cause signs of fever, lameness, and thrombocytopenia similar to infection with A. phagocytophila. Recently, it has also been shown to be another cause of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in humans, that is clinically indistinguishable from HGE caused by infection with A. phagocytophila. The organism is primarily transmitted by the lone-star tick, Amblyomma americanum, and white-tailed deer are the primary reservoir of the organism in nature.
