The Richard F. Marsh Outstanding Graduate Student Award, funded by a generous donation from the Marsh family, recognizes a recent CBMS Ph.D. recipient or dissertator, for his or her exceptional research accomplishments. The Award consists of an engraved plaque and an honorarium.
After a hiatus of several years, the CBMS Academic Committee recently solicited applications for the 2010 Award. We received applications from six outstanding students, each of whom are excellent representatives of the program. After considerable discussion, the committee selected Dr. Chia-wei Wu for the 2010 Richard F. Marsh Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Dr. Wu recently completed his Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Adel Talaat, which resulted in five first-author publications and one patent application. Other applicants also had excellent qualifications, making this a very difficult decision for the committee.
Two students were chosen for the 2011 Richard F. Marsh Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Matt Aliota, recently received his PhD from Prof. Bruce Christensen and is currently a postdoc in the laboratory of Dr. Laura Knolls, Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, UW-Madison. Susannah Sample also recently received her PhD from Prof. Mark Markel and is currently a small animal resident at the UW Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The recipients of the 2011 award, as well as Dr. Wu, were recognized at the 2011 SVM Awards Banquet held May 2011.
