C-L-E-A-R bacteria: colony arrangement

All members of the CLEAR group look fairly similar on blood agar. The colonies are very small to pinpoint after 24 hours of incubation and somewhat larger after 48 hours, indicative of the fact that they grow more slowly than most of the other organisms studied in the lab. The colonies are generally round, smooth, glistening and usually opaque.

The CLEAR organisms may exhibit alpha-, beta- or gamma-hemolysis, but the hemolysis zone is typically very small, and may be difficult to see. The hemolysis may only be det4ected when a colony is removed from the agar surface.

Hemolysis

Pictured at left is Arcanobacterium pyogenesat 24 hours. This species is beta-hemolytic, although the hemolysis is not obvious on this slide.

Hemolysis

Colonies of Rhodococcus equi may be larger and more mucoid than the other CLEAR organisms and exhibit a slightly pink color, especially after 48 hours of incubation.

Hemolysis

Colonies of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis appear very dry and chalky white.
