Streptococcus: colony arrangement

Colony morphology
Streptococcus sp. form smaller colonies than Staphylococcus. These colonies are typically round, smooth, glistening and translucent. Hemolysis may or may not be present. The organism in this slide is beta-hemolytic.

Streptococcus equi is larger and more mucoid than most typical Streptococcus It is beta-hemolytic. Streptococcus equi is a common cause of strangles in young horses.
