Clinical Rotations - Mastitis Problem Investigations

Milk Quality and Mastitis Troubleshooting

Learn to:

  • Evaluate rates of clinical mastitis using manual and computerized (DairyComp 305) record systems
  • Interpret somatic cell count records to target mastitis problems
  • Collect samples and interpret milk microbiology reports
  • Evaluate mastitis risks in housing systems (stalls, bedded packs, etc.)
  • Analyze milking systems and milk practices
  • Develop mastitis treatment protocols

These skills are taught using UW herds and investigations of mastitis-problem herds referred to the School of Veterinary Medicine. This course will prepare you to deliver mastitis management services to dairy herds.

Dates: May 2009-2010

  • Weeks 13 & 14 (8/10/09 to 8/21/09)
  • Weeks 29 & 30 (11/30/09 to 12/11/09)
