MADISON - On Sunday, Sept, 19, at 10 am, hundreds of animal lovers and their dogs will gather for the 27th annual Dog Jog benefit race, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. But the time they take to run (or walk) the two-mile course takes a back seat to the money they raise and the worthy cause it supports.
Last year, some 800 participants generated over $22,000, and organizers hope to raise even more this year. Proceeds benefit area humane organizations, including those that participate in the veterinary school’s Cooperative Shelter Spay/Neuter Program for shelter pets. This year’s beneficiaries include Angel's Wish of Dane County, Country Animal Haven of Dane County, Dane County Humane Society, Iowa County Humane Society, Humane Society of Jefferson County, Rock County Humane Society, Sauk County Humane Society, Washington County Humane Society, and Watertown Humane Society in Jefferson County.
Anyone who loves animals is encouraged to give, whether a dog person or a cat person, a runner, a walker or a spectator. The public is encouraged to sponsor a neighbor, friend, or family member, or even contribute in the name of their pet. Online donations can be made via www.dogjog.org
"Dogs and cats alike benefit," says Dr. Linda Sullivan, a veterinarian at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine who oversees the Dog Jog.
Sponsored by the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine's Companion Animal Club, this colorful event draws pledgers from across Wisconsin. Participants compete for best costume, most pledges, and best finish times. Major supporters include John Urban, Merial Ltd., Isthmus/The Daily Page.com, Doggie Doo, Culligan Total Water, Full Compass, and Novartis.
The two mile run/walk will once again begin in Parking Lot 60, near the intersection of Walnut Street and University Bay Drive on the west end of the UW-Madison campus.
Registration forms are available at the school's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Forms can also be downloaded from www.dogjog.org . For more information call 608/263-1010.
