The School of Veterinary Medicine's Dr. Christopher Olsen, who has done research on swine influenza viruses, points out that the newly-emerged swine flu is not the same as the H5N1 bird influenza virus. It also is not a food-borne illness, meaning there is no risk from eating or handling pork. Spread of the disease occurs through the respiratory tract, human to human.
