Analgesic Efficacy of Liposomal Hydromorphone for Limb Amputation in Dogs

The UW School of Veterinary Medicine's anesthesiology section is seeking dogs to participate in a clinical trial for a promising new therapeutic agent that will provide extended analgesia after amputation in dogs.

Owners that choose to enroll their dog in the trial receive a sizable monetary discount on their final VMTH bill.

The anesthesiologists are investigating an extended release injectable formulation of the commonly used opioid analgesic, hydromorphone. Extensive studies in their laboratory on research dogs have shown that this formulation provides up to four days of analgesia after one injection, with side effects similar to those seen with other clinically used opioids in dogs.

To obtain more information on eligibility requirements and discounts for enrollees, please call Dr. Lesley Smith at 608-265-9181 or email smithl@vetmed.wisc.edu. Clients may also call the clinic directly at 608-263-7600 and ask for Dr. Smith for more information.
