Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Expansion
The mission of the School of Veterinary Medicine is to provide unparalleled clinical patient care, research, and teaching. We know that our clients and our patients, who depend on the VMTH for the highest level of veterinary care, endorse that goal. For that goal to be achieved and maintained, however, our facilities, faculty, and equipment must also be the very best.

Above: The new building will incorporate a Large Animal Hospital, Small Animal Hospital, plus space for animal health studies.
The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) was opened in 1983 to support the school’s provision of excellent primary and specialized care for companion animals (including equine patients) and food animals.
More than 17,000 dogs, cats and other pets as well as livestock come to our hospital each year for expert care. For many, our hospital is their best hope for recovery from life threatening disease and injury.
Growth Beyond Capacity
The remarkable increase in the number of patients, the expanding number of clinical specialties, and the amount and complexity of specialized equipment could not have been, and were not, predicted when the present VMTH was designed more than 20 years ago. Consequently, the present VMTH no longer provides the amount or quality of space necessary simply to sustain our existing programs. The need for expansion and renovation has become acute.
Bold Vision for the Future
We have adopted a bold vision that allows the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital to play a critical role in pursuing the School of Veterinary Medicine’s vision and strategic priorities in the modern era.
Such a major step forward will carry the Large and Small Animal Hospitals through the next 20-30 years of growth. Our goal is not only to complement and facilitate current ventures, but also to provide the flexibility and potential to address new opportunities and challenges in veterinary medicine that we cannot currently foresee.
We are planning for:
- Assurance of 20 years of serviceability
- A building that over the coming decade will still complement every aspect of our work
- A building to inspire the people working within it, creating opportunities as yet unexplored
Be a Part of Our Building Team!
The price tag for all these improvements must be met by private donations. We’re counting on friends like you. Your gift, earmarked for the veterinary school’s building fund in honor/memory of a special animal or person, will go a long way toward improving the health care available to all animals. We hope you will give generously.
