Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine attracts extremely bright and talented students. Each year, 80 students rise to the top of an applicant pool of 800-plus individuals and are accepted into the veterinary medical degree program. These highly motivated individuals are the future of veterinary medicine. They will work with the dogs, cats, horses and cows of Wisconsin residents as well as assume leadership positions in academia, industry, and public health.
The four-year professional veterinary medical degree program provides an excellent education for these students, but it comes at a cost. At graduation, average debt loads are over $90,000, yet starting salaries are relatively modest.
Scholarships make a real difference to students.
- They can focus on school and studying without worrying about finances. It’s difficult to absorb knowledge at full capacity when one is constantly worried about bills at home or supporting a family.
- They gain greater flexibility in their educational choices (possibly choosing an externship in a field of interest that they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise).
- If their debt load at graduation can be eased, they can broaden their career choices rather than enter practice immediately. For example, they might choose to pursue a Masters degree in Public Health (where they can help resolve international health issues such as bioterrorism, influenza, or viral diseases)
Your donations to the Student Scholarship fund will ease the load of extremely bright and dedicated students, allowing them to concentrate on their education rather than on financial worries.
Our goal is to raise $20 million, so that we can help supplement the high cost of an education for these highly qualified and motivated individuals.
