 Network usage policy

The spirit of the usage policy is simple. You may not use University networks or email in ways that violate University policies or state or federal laws.

It is the policy of the Board of Regents that facilities of the university are to be used primarily for purposes of fulfilling the university's mission of teaching, research and public service. University facilities are not available for unrestricted use for other purposes.

University email is a powerful communication tool; but it is not to be used as a substitute for personal telephone calls or personal mail service. Computing and network facilities are not intended to be used for personal purposes or gain; they are not provided as a medium of expression unrelated to the academic programs or operations of the University.

All users must use computing equipment, software, and network access in a manner consistent with appropriate university codes of conduct and applicable statutes of the Wisconsin Criminal Code.

Activities that interfere with the ability of other users to make effective use of campus computing and network resources are prohibited.

No user may allow anyone else to use their account.

Division of Information Technology personnel will not aggressively seek out violators of these policies, however violations that are brought to the division's attention will be handled through existing disciplinary, grievance, and hearing procedures. Policy infractions may incur sanctions up to and including dismissal.
