Dual Degree (DVM/MPH)
The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a combined Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program that allows students to complete both degrees in 5
years.
Numerous reports have highlighted the growing need for veterinarians with public health training, including the recent landmark Foresight Report: Envisioning the Future of Veterinary Medical Education (Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 2007). Our program offers students broad training within both veterinary medicine and public health, while also providing opportunities for focal areas of educational endeavor. Eight academic credits from the DVM degree program are applied towards the MPH degree as elective course credits. Students typically complete the first two years of the DVM degree program, then 12 months of concentrated public health education, and finally completion of the last two years of the DVM degree. As such, it is not necessary to apply to the MPH degree program until after beginning the DVM program. However, customization of the relative educational schedule between the two programs is possible.
